Was the Phantom of the Opera based on a real person?
If he was, can anyone give me information on proof of his existance? I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that the lake beneath the Paris Opera House was drained and that a dwelling was found – along with the Don Juan manuscript.
No. Erik was not based on a real person.
Written by Gaston Leroux between 1909 and 1910, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is believed to be based on the book: TRILBY by George du Maurier.
Gaston Leroux was a journalist, detective, and world traveler who graduated from law school. He covered the investigation of an opera house in Paris that contained the cells that held the ‘communards’ captured from the Paris Commune of 1871, and were executed in those cells by the Foreign Legion.
The book: PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, has a brilliant plot but is poorly written, and comes off in movie or play form better than in prose. Gaston Leroux skills was not reflected in his writing ability.
