Manchester’s Opera House
The Opera House in Manchester opened for business back in 1912. Since them, the nearly 2,000 seat theater has hosted countless musicals, stage shows and performances. There’s a lot of history in the old opera house. Manchester shows no signs of replacing it, however. It remains and active and vibrant part of the community.
If you want to see a musical, ballet, concert or other production in Manchester, you’ll probably be visiting the Opera House. Manchester has a long history of hosting wonderful events and the building on Quay Street has been an integral part of that past.
When West Side Story made its European debut, it did so in the Manchester Opera House. The venerable structure is also known for welcoming the regional debut of The Phantom of the Opera, which had a two-year run in the structure. Those are only two of the more famous musicals held in the building. Many others have been staged there and it has served as host to countless premieres of now well-recognized shows over the past ninety years.
There’s no sign of an imminent slowdown at the old Opera House. Manchester will be hosting no fewer than ten different shows–all of which have multiple dates–in the structure during the coming months. It’s still the epicenter of live musical theater in the city. It’s hard to find a native of Manchester who hasn’t been to at least one show at the Opera House and thousands upon thousands of out-of-town visitors have enjoyed its offerings, as well.
The success of the venue is attributable to a few unique features of the Opera House. Manchester is lucky to have a venue of its caliber in such a great location. The area surrounding the arena remains vibrant and lively, destroying any impetus for its replacement. Additionally, it’s an ideal size for the kind of shows hosted there. The 1,920 seats allow for just enough great seating to satisfy the community’s needs when shows have multiple performances. It’s neither too small nor too big.
It’s also an ideal size for single concert events and many top performers have been happy to take the stage of the Opera House. Manchester frequently enjoys big name concerts in an intimate setting thanks to the presence of the Opera House.
Of course, much of the success can be attributed to the beauty and function of the Opera House. Manchester has long appreciated the architecture of this unique facility and for an older hall; it offers both good sight lines from almost all seats and surprisingly strong acoustics.
If you plan on visiting Manchester and would like to take in a chow, you may very well find yourself becoming yet another patron of the old Opera House on Quay Street.

Why are there no dates for “The Phantom of the Opera” for july in New York?
We’re trying to buy tickets to “Phantom” at the Majestic theatre in New York for July but there are no dates for July only up till june. Why is that? should we just wait to see if they’ll put more dates up or what?
